Emily Jane Bio (Long):

Soulful and melancholic, Emily Jane’s music is reminiscent of artists like Joni Mitchell, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Leonard Cohen. Centred around simplicity and vulnerability, Emily’s music focuses on issues we are afraid to speak about; situations which place the listener at their most vulnerable. With weeping strings, harrowing vocals and poignant lyricism, Emily’s soft, orchestral folk-style music will acknowledge your darkest moments and remind you that you are never alone.

Emily has just released her debut EP Behind Closed Doors which, in the words of Happy Mag, "...will tear your chest open and stitch it back together with her gut wrenching lyricism, delivered by her captivatingly melancholic voice." which "holds an unnerving weight that will blanket you wholly". Single 'Behind Closed Doors' places Emily at her most exposed, taking her back into her own experience with domestic abuse, reflecting conflict of subservience, anger, devotion and grief victims feel. Rejecting the idea of a survivor song, ‘Behind Closed Doors’ was written as a reminder to victims that it is okay to grieve for yourself and to remind those who need it that self-grief holds no expiry date when faced with trauma. The track has been well received and the message supported, making it to #13 Most Played on 4ZZZ on the week of its release as well as debuting at #66 on the triple j Unearthed charts. Other tracks on the EP continue to document Emily’s grief, with ‘Until Then’ expressing her experience post-toxic relationship and her unhealthy coping mechanisms as she felt at her lowest. This is followed by ‘Scintilla’ where she drops her usual acoustic for an atmospheric electric guitar. The track details the associated heartache and subservience felt when devoted to someone who only wants you for superficial, self-serving reasons.

Alongside this release and accompanying shows at Nightquarter with her full band, Emily also released ukulele-centric track Yesterday’s Coffee’. Written with bright instrumentation and a catchy melody to juxtapose the darkness of the lyrics, Emily focuses on her own experiences dealing with the impacts of sexual assault. Due to this contrast, the song makes the meaning hard to fully interpret on the first listen, making it easily dismissible which conveys the way we, as a society, treat victims of sexual assault and normalise sexual harassment and violence.  This BandCamp exclusive release sits as a teaser into what is next to come for Emily, with plans to release a second EP mid-2019. With more heartache to share, Emily Jane invites you to continue to share in her stories so together we can all heal.
